Three Chartwells Higher Education chefs in Idaho recently had the opportunity to compete in a culinary showdown with a special guest, Food Network’s Chef Justin Warner, who hosted the event and served as a judge. The event took place in Nov. at the University of Idaho, and chefs from that university as well Boise State University and Idaho State University participated.

The three participating chefs were tasked with creating a dish that showcases their culinary skills. The chefs used ingredients from Simplot, Double R Ranch and Spiceology, all of which donated food for the competition.

“We are so excited for this event because it gives us a chance to showcase local Idaho products and ingredients from the Palouse. Not only do the winners get bragging rights, but the campuses are all gunning to get an awesome trophy to show off,” said Kylene Ott, Chartwells regional vice president, in a statement.

The event ended with a live judge’s panel at the residential dining hall, where students were invited to watch as the judges deliberated. The competition was also live-streamed and both Boise State University and Idaho State University hosted watching parties in their dining halls.

Chef Michael from the University of Idaho was crowned the winner for his pan-seared Coulotte steak with a garbanzo bean pupusa.

Meanwhile, Chef Roland from Boise State University served up a beef curry with jasmine rice and a sweet potato flatbread. And Chef Rob from Idaho State University created a Brazilian steak with roasted sweet potatoes.

“This event is a fantastic opportunity for our chefs to showcase their talents and for the Idaho community to come together in celebration of culinary excellence,” said Nathan Underwood, University of Idaho associate auxiliary director of dining and campus services. “We are grateful to our sponsors and partners for their support in making this event possible.”
