CSU Offers Halal Choices

Colorado State University dining halls are now making halal dishes available to students who are observant Muslims, reports the Rocky Mountain Collegian. Halal (meaning "permitted" in Arabic) refers to meats (mostly beef, chicken and some seafood but not pork) that come from animals slaughtered in a specific way, similar to kosher restrictions for obervant Jews.

Halal meals such as barbeque grilled chicken breast, cheeseburgers, buffalo wings, chipotle chicken sandwiches and sweet chili Asian chicken wings are now offered upon request in CSU's Parmelee Dining Center while Corbett dining hall also features non-beef/chicken halal options such as mozzarella cheese sticks, red beans and rice, baked cod with lemon and grilled Portobello mushrooms. The same outside vendors that provide standard dining hall proteins also provide the halal meat.
