Colorado State University’s Housing & Dining Services unveiled its newly renovated Durrell Center at a sneak peek event for the campus community on Friday, August 16. Fall classes begin August 26.

The 40-year-old Durrel had undergone extensive renovations to transform it into a state-of-the-art hub on the north side of the Ft. Collins campus. It includes meeting rooms, recreation space, study space and a dining center with new food venues such as an International Station and a Make-Your-Own Pasta/Noodle Saute Bar.

“We are thrilled to offer this state-of-the-art facility for our students who will eat, engage, socialize, and study in a comfortable atmosphere while working toward their academic success at CSU,” says Laura Giles, director of Residence Life in Housing & Dining Services.

The renovations include a focus on sustainability and environmentally friendly practices. Solar tubes, recycled and repurposed materials, energy-efficient lights and equipment and a food pulper were included in the building.

“The pulper utilizes a centrifuge to cycle all food scraps and plate waste through a system that removes and recycles excess water while preparing a ‘pulp-like’ material for our composter,” says Tonie Miyamoto, director of communications and sustainability for Housing & Dining Services. “We are pursuing a LEED Commercial Interior certification for the building.”

“I think the outdoor space added to Durrell will be a big hit,” Giles said. “We added multiple student study and gathering spaces around the exterior, as well as a dining deck that faces Moby Arena to take advantage of the Colorado sunshine year-round."
