Students at the University of California at Los Angeles have the opportunity to take cooking classes this quarter, Daily Bruin reports.

The university is offering six classes instructed by dining hall chefs. Classes cover a range of topics such as basic knife skills, sushi making and how to craft balanced meals. Students can sign up for classes via a lottery system, which will select 16 students at random for each class. UCLA says that over 600 students have entered the lottery.

Foodservice staff decided to offer the classes after receiving feedback from students, who said they would like to participate in cooking classes.

If the pilot classes go well, the foodservice team hopes to offer permanent classes each quarter and eventually offer a credited course.
