Los Angeles Unified School District cafeteria staff will join other LAUSD support staff workers in a one-day strike on May 15, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Workers say the strike is due to unjust labor practices. The employees, who are part of Service Employees International Union Local 99, have been negotiating their contract with the school district for over a year.

Last month, around 94% of union members voted to allow the bargaining committee to call a strike if necessary.

District officials say a strike would be unlawful since the Public Employment Relations Board has not decided whether the workers have encountered unjust labor practices. They also disputed a claim made by Local 99 that they interfered with a strike authorization vote, saying that an isolated incident in which a teacher asked a worker to remove strike material from a bulletin board happened without the district’s knowledge.
