To celebrate National Farm to School Month in October, the district hosted its first Pennsylvania Preferred Day, with a lunch menu centered on local products, including grilled cheese made with a cheddar-jack blend from September Farm in Honey Brook, Penn., and whole-wheat bread baked by Stroehmann Pennsylvania Dutch Bakers in Horsham, Penn. The district also supports a unique Philadelphia-based social enterprise that employs local high school students and created whole-grain apple-cranberry breakfast cakes that are manufactured by a local bakery and available on the breakfast menu in its more than 200 cafeterias.
