Proudest career accomplishment in the past year:
All of my life, public speaking has been my biggest fear. Starting this job, I was given the monumental task of allergy training every member of the dining staff. This really pushed me out of my comfort zone, and after giving a successful training to a packed auditorium of more than 60 people, I realized my fear was gone. That was a proud moment for me.
Best career advice you’ve been given:
My boss, Lisa Eberhart, always says to be your own advocate. That goes for so many areas of life, especially in the workplace. Nobody is going to make you succeed unless you personally aim for success.
Short- and long-term career goals:
As someone who suffers from food allergies, I want to make it easier for incoming freshmen to eat safely on campus. Food should not be an added stressor while attending N.C. State, and I work closely with students and their families to ensure their dietary needs are met with relative ease. Long term, I see myself helping people and remaining in the food industry.
How the industry will change in the next five years:
I see more and more colleges and universities offering foods that satisfy current trends or shifts in millennial diets, whether that be gluten-free, vegan or sustainable. Foodservice institutions will have to adapt and create more customizable menu items to accommodate all needs. This is right up my alley, so I am excited to see the offerings expand in college dining, as well as at restaurants and chains.
